Tottenham Today. London Tomorrow.
Tottenham is the start. The EMA riots of last year, the battles of March the 26th, along with the many smaller scuffles at town halls from Lewisham to Hackney, they all build to today. The start of 2011’s Urban Riots. The opening of the first front.
Fuck Generalise the strike, we say Generalise the Riot. The next few days will see “experts” try and tell you this wasn’t about anything except a slight bit of anger at the police, a minor bit of civil disorder that is now under control and any local problems are being addressed. FUCK OFF.
You don’t get riots for no reason. The murder of Mark Duggan may have been the spark but ALARM has been saying since it was founded that walking round London is like walking on gunpowder. The streets are covered and just waiting to blow.
The Rich and politicians have pushed people too far. An economically bankrupt society, people being pushed out of their homes by gentrification, the NHS is being privatised, schools failing our children. Transport, food, shelter, electricity all utterly unaffordable. All of this is held in
place up by the murderous force of the Metropolitan police.
Their ‘rule of law’ is a sham. We live under a system of rule BY law, the police hassle you, nick you and then decide what you’ve done wrong. Don’t ever forget that they started this.
Tottenham is the start, other boroughs, cities and streets will be following. These will not be race riots, but Class riots. People are hitting back in the only viable way, with violence. The ballot box has shown its inability to bring change, the A to B marches of the left have utterly failed to show our plight. There is no voice for us except on the streets.

murderous thugs. Two police cars burnt,Bus in flames and long stand offs with police. Protests took to the streets demanding justice after a 29-year-old father-of-four, named as Mark Duggan, was shot dead by police on Thursday.

Do not ask for the EDL to be Banned
Ban the EDL march. The current chant right now of the Left. They are insane.
Some people are getting into the old rhetoric “We are proud of Tower Hamlets, a vibrant multiracial area, which has along and proud history of resistance to racism & fascism. From Cable Street in the 1930s, to Brick Lane in the 1970s and to Millwall in the1990s, the people of Tower Hamlets have come together to see off racism and fascism before. We will now stand united against the racist and extremist EDL.” Reads a letter from Hope not Hate in which they repeatedly ask for a ban.
In the 30’s they did not ask for a fucking ban they stopped them. The answer to Nationalist right wing nuts is never State oppression. The EDL must be defeated on the streets. There is no other solution to them.
All the EDL have to offer is a paranoid partially twisted dystopian future, one shared with people like Anders Behring Breivik who’s grotesque actions in Norway are fuelled by the same hateful ideology of anti-immigration hysteria. They rub shoulders in the same political world alongside a plethora of religious bigots. They may claim not to be an explicit fascist organisation but they fail to realise that they are igniting a political vacuum that allows and even encourages it’s behaviour. Is there a chance of EDL activists turning down this path of lone wolf bombs and gun attacks? Yes, London has seen an example before with David Copeland the nail bomber. This EDL is where their politics ends, with violence.
Banning their march’s only further legitimises their arguments. A tiny tiny tiny minority of orthodox Islamic followers do need to be criticised and protested. If their march’s are banned their narrative of victimisation, that all Muslims are a problem and that the Left are willing to allow this country to fall into this minority hands becomes more acceptable, despite lacking any proof. If their marches are banned it makes them seem right, their numbers will grow, this is unacceptable. They must be stopped. And they must be stopped by the only language they know. On the streets.
The only thing that is certain is that a ban on the EDL march in Tower Hamlets will be a nightmare. Without the EDL on the 3rd to protest, our community will be attacked by another invading army, the police as seen before on June 20th last year. The groups that turn out to oppose the absent EDL will have the shit kicked out of them by the police. Kids will be rounded up beaten, arrested and months later sent to jail.
The EDL can be defeated politically (just not by Newsnight’s Paxman) because their ideas are mental. They want to pit us against our neighbours. We live here and we know for a fact that “English” and “Muslim” people can and do live side by fucking side in shit cramped housing and get along just fine.
And if they do head down to Tower Hamlets on the 3rd they will be defeated on the streets. And this is what NEEDS to happen. We don’t need a ban on the EDL, we need to stand against them. Not walk away to Weaver’s field, but to stand in front of them. Stop them marching, show them that they cannot not intimidate, divide and batter a community.
If the EDL are not beaten on our streets they will never go away, if they are not smashed to atoms – physically and ideologically – then they will continue to grow and infect. If the EDL are banned and go underground without being definitively defeated on the streets we will never be able to operate without a fear of them. They will become the bogeyman to radical politics.
State intervention is a worrying turn, the State stepping in and banning EDL protests is not a sign of a left wing section of the State acting, or even an Islamic element gaining strength, it is a sign of a further move to a totalitarian State. We already have the camps in Yarlswood, thug police that get away with murder and an ever watching State gathering information on us. We don’t need to campaign for them to ban political groups. Today the EDL, tomorrow us.
We don’t need the State to stop the EDL. We need to do this ourselves. We need our communities to work together, overcome divisive elements and tackle the threat of fundamentalism in whatever forms it takes. This is the only way the working class can stand strong in the Governments onslaught of public service cuts. United we stand, divided we fall.
The EDL Get Exposed on the Internet.
It’s already been an interesting week for people who take an (academic) interest in the nationalist idiots at the English Defence League (EDL). As we get nearer to September 3rd, they get nearer to total collapse as their dodgy dealings catch up with them and their thin veneer of ‘respectability’ falls away. Not that it fooled any of us in the first place, of course.
It all seemed to start last week, when EDL members flamed the ALARM! Facebook Page en masse, calling us out and threatening to smash our skulls in Tower Hamlets. During the process many EDL showed their true colours, calling us (and i paraphrase for simplicity) ‘faggots/commies/muslim lovers’ and so on and so fourth. Anti gay, anti-communist and anti-muslim. So much for not being fascists, eh?
Then came the rather interesting @everythingedl Twitpic feed , that was brought to our attention by a poster on our comments page. This features screenshots of EDL Facebook pages that unmask the real nature of the EDL, with people talking of going ‘paki bashing’ on September 3rd amongst other things. Whoever put the work in to making this Twitpic feed happen is a genius. Well done.
Then there was the bottling of the protest organised by self proclaimed “gay Tommy Robinson” Liam Wood for Saturday 23 July on Manchester’s Canal Street. The EDL LGBT Division wanted to go flyering against “muslim homophobia”. If you want sexual liberation, you aren’t going to find it in preaching a cowardly loyalty to the status quo; Queen and Country are happy to see people die of poverty, do you really think they care about our orgasms?
Then came the horrific attack by Anders Brehing Breivik.
We obviously don’t need to go into too much detail about the attack itself, as we are sure you are familiar with the story. Needless to say we completely condemn such a disgusting massacre of innocent young people. However, the same cannot be said for the boneheads at the EDL.

Brothers and Sisters,
The English Defence League has announced that on the weekend of the 3rd of September they will be marching on Tower Hamlets “to oppose Muslim extremism.” While they couch themselves in politically correct terms and stances (such as “defending women and gays against fundamentalism”) in reality the EDL divide our communities and pit working people against each other based on religion and ethnicity. They are as dangerous to our communities as those few loud individuals advocating Muslim extremism, who also seek to divide us along lines of ethnicity and religion.
This kind of division cannot be allowed to happen at a time when working people and communities are striving hard to oppose the Tories’ vicious attack on our jobs and services. We must stand united if we are to defeat the cuts, and by showing the EDL the door we will be sending a clear message to the far right and to the government about how we mean to defeat their plans.
We call on you to oppose them as vehemently as our unions once opposed the BNP, the National Front and Moseley’s fascists. Whitechapel has a long and proud history of resistance to the far right, and we are determined to stand in defence of the borough and its vibrant communities. Please join with us to counter the EDL march and send them running out of London!
We ask any people in unions throughout Tower Hamlets to go to their union branch meeting and propose a motion of support for the anti-EDL protests on the 3rd of September.
We also ask you to not support the banning of the EDL protest. But to instead join with us on the 3rd of September in either marching with the UAF counter demonstration or joining with a variety of groups organising against the EDL on the streets around Tower Hamlets.

Dear EDL,
We are not the UAF. We’re not being shipped in from student halls. We know these streets and we know the people here because we live with them. And we’re not threatening you, we’re telling you what will happen. This isn’t some village in the North. And these aren’t trots and stalinists your going to be fighting.
This is the East End.
You come here you will get hurt. By us? Nah, sure we will be out on the day but our biggest worry is the youth round here getting nicked having a crack at you.
Every time you threaten to come we see our community getting harassed by the police, even your little mobs stopping by on their way back to Croydon get run out of the area under police protection or end up in the hospital, and You think you can take Tower Hamlets?
Twice you’ve tried to come here, once to stop the UK-IC conference at the Troxy and once hidden under a rainbow flag. And Twice you’ve bottled it.
You go on about what Islam is and what it means, most people round here are Muslims, but not the type you talk about, sure we don’t agree with religion, but the people round here don’t believe in what you say. How could we live here if they did? How could we drink in pubs? Walk home at night? Or even share the same council tower blocks?
The groups that believe in the madness you moan on about are like you. From outside the area, coming in to start trouble. And like the other groups who have been kicked from the mosques, you will be sent away as well.

The EDL will not only be facing mass opposition from Bangladeshi Eastenders or even angry Muslims but secular forces ranging from local youth, trade unionists, street gangs, militant anti-fascists – much to their dismay, the EDL will painfully discover there are substantial numbers of white Eastenders who will physically oppose them on Sept 3rd.”.
We in the EDL would like to inform you that we ” The English Defence League” have just reached OUR 2 year point and in this time we have had bigger threats than that placed by some people who are trying to make a name for their selves.
We have read the constant ratings of what the UAF thought they could do to us but now the left winged reds who are funded by labour and who are the governments whipping boys can only pull 10 to 20 members at a counter so have now had to fill hate and join ranks with the likes of MAC and MDL ( as you are also doing).
We within the English defence league our Proud of our history and our culture. We want to keep England “English”.

I am confused by your post Alarm members as I was under the understanding that an “Anarchist” stood against Oppression yet you stand with one of the worse religions for oppression and you are playing into the governmental hands and joining the ranks with the left of being the government’s whipping boy . The EDL are marching into the “lion’s den” and into the “heart of the UK’s most militant Islamic area”.
We have only one message for the EDL, steer clear of Tower Hamlets. Coming here on Sept 3rd will be a risky enterprise for you. The EDL will not only be facing mass opposition from Bangladeshi Eastenders or even angry Muslims but secular forces ranging from local youth, trade unionists, street gangs, militant anti-fascists – much to their dismay, the EDL will painfully discover there are substantial numbers of white Eastenders who will physically oppose them on Sept 3rd.
The EDL have no politics except mindless support of the monarchy and armed forces. They worship authority, incoherently abase themselves before the utterly bankrupt system, love the bosses, grovel before their “social superiors”. They oppose any challenge to our society and the wealthy, from striking workers, rebellious students, school kids to the “black Bloc” And of course the EDL have their rabid islamophobia.
The EDL in true football hooligan style are boosting of “Taking” Tower Hamlets. It is they who will be “taken” one way or another. These “Law and Order” fanatics may even find themselves on the receiving end of police brutality. How ironic, it’s beyond parody that the EDL claim to be against the homophobia and misogynist bigoted outfits such as Hibz-ul Tahir. You couldn’t make it up, Misogynist homophobes against homophobic misogynists. The EDL and hate groups like Hibz-ul Tahir live in a symbiotic relationship feeding off and boosting each other.
UAF (or the ever opportunistic left) are another ingredient in this bubbling cauldron. They have called a national demonstration in Tower Hamlets, Sept 3rd. Do they believe the people of Tower Hamlets are incapable of dealing with the EDL themselves? Or defending the area? We welcome any genuine support but don’t need to be marched off in the opposite direction from the EDL. Or preached to by a collection of shady politicians and Leninists masquerading as “Democrats” Do they really think we are so thick that we need to be told what the EDL are or represent? Or that we need to be “led” on the day?
We don’t call on the authorities to ban the EDL demonstration. We are only too aware of police behaviour on the streets of Tower Hamlets, and the role of the courts and government. In no way do we require their “protection” – we have had enough of it already. Should the EDL be foolish enough to show up on the 3rd of September they will only succeed in uniting the White, Asian and Black working class and others against them. And we certainly need to be united for the fight against the next financial meltdown, the cuts, their social consequences and the mass intrusive policing the state is planning for the forthcoming 2012 Olympics – when we will be placed under a situation that resembles military occupation. Sept 3rd is a prelude to this. A final message to the EDL – step into a Lion’s den and you will be torn apart.
Purveyors of hatred are not welcome!
Hizb ut Tahrir, a supremacist global Islamist group, are holding an event on Saturday 9th at the Water Lily Centre on Mile End Road. Hizb ut Tahrir are renowned for espousing anti-Semitic, homophobic poison and pushing an extreme, twisted version of Islam. It seems that the Water Lily Centre is allowing itself to become a magnet for hate. Last November, Anjem Choudary tried to stage an event there, but his luck ran out when his cover was blown. At the time, the Water Lily said that extremists weren’t welcome. Yet they’ve accepted a booking from Hizb ut Tahrir, although allegedly, the booking was made under the name of ‘Muslim Forum UK’.* One of the directors of the Water Lily was made aware of this but said that unless there were any objections from the police, the event would be allowed to go ahead. It would seem that business is business… Well, you can take the opportunity to let the Water Lily know about your disquiet at allowing the purveyors of anti-Semitism and homophobia to speak at their venue – here are the contact details:

Tower Hamlets has numerous problems with economic and social deprivation. It doesn’t need the purveyors of hate and division in the form of Hizb ut Tahrir coming into the borough to prey on the frustration and alienation felt by many of the youth in the area. Our message to Hizb ut Tahrir and any other hate merchants thinking of coming into Tower Hamlets to stir things up for their own devious, nefarious ends is summed up by the slogan below.
